About Harrogate District Hospital
In a typical year, Harrogate District Hospital deals with a staggering 8.5 million investigations in its labs, 53,000 emergency department admissions, 35,000 inpatient admissions, and 1,800 births.
Previous waste management on site
The hospital’s previous waste management service consisted of six FEL skips on site, which was an inconvenience that involved a lot of manual handling and required daily waste collections.
The hospital’s key waste management objectives
The key objectives set out by Harrogate District Hospital for their new waste management service from Forge Waste & Recycling included:
- A reduction in manual handling
- A decrease in transport visits to and from the site
- A reduction in overall waste management costs
The Forge Recycling waste management solution
Team Forge took the aforementioned key objectives on board and produced a waste management solution to suit all of the hospital’s requirements.
The installation of a general waste compactor with a bin lift was a crucial step in our solution. This vastly reduces instances of manual handling and related risks and results in far fewer transport visits to and from the site for waste collection, reducing the Carbon footprint.
At Forge, we always take a personal approach and offer customised flexibility in services to meet the waste needs of every customer, including Harrogate District Hospital — making waste disposal quicker and easier through the use of innovative technology and equipment, including staff training for this, which can be seen below:
Forge’s eco-conscious commitment
Installing a general waste compactor has also provided the hospital with an eco-friendly method of waste disposal which minimises environmental impact.
With waste collections now occurring weekly rather than daily, there has been a considerable reduction in container movements and vehicle transport, resulting in much less CO2 being produced through the transportation involved.
Forge Recycling is a carbon-neutral business and offsets all carbon produced within waste collections. This is achieved by calculating the amount of carbon produced during collections and offsetting this by planting trees. Forge operates consciously to minimise its environmental impact at all times.
The team at Forge will continue to go above and beyond to adapt services and seek ways to continue excellent service for the benefit of the customer and the environment.
In this case, Forge is continuously supporting Harrogate District Hospital and keeping up with its ever-changing needs through close communication, monthly reporting and regular site visits to ensure customer satisfaction.
A word from the customer
Kirsten Bain, Waste Specialist at Harrogate District Hospital, said:
"We have now worked with Forge for nearly a year, and we can't fault their services. Their customer service team are only too happy to help and has never failed with getting emergency waste lifts squeezed in with only a moment’s notice.
Our Key Account Manager works very closely with us, which is key to our environment as it’s always evolving or changing.
In comparison to our previous contractor, working with Forge is like a breath of fresh air. They are not here just to provide a service but are keen to improve the environment and assist with finding new technology to improve the reduction of our carbon footprint.
Moving to Forge has had a huge impact on our cost-saving targets with a 35% reduction in charges over the last 3 months compared to last year's figures with the previous contractor.”
