Bronte Girls’ Academy and Feversham Girls’ Academy, Bradford
Education
Forge Recycling are excited to share the details of our partnership with Bronte Girls’ Academy and Feversham Girls’ Academy, in Bradford, which has allowed a model school recycling set up to be created.
Both schools are part of the Feversham Education Trust, and shared the objective of increasing their recycling rates to add to their environmental efforts, such as their plastic-free initiative of using biodegradable packaging to serve school dinners. As a result of a recent insightful site audit, Forge planned to increase the school’s recycling by implementing a food service to compost all food and biodegradable packaging. Within a week of the audit, this plan to make the most of this compostable material, through implementing food recycling and reducing general waste collections, was underway.

The 4 food bins at Bronte Girls’ and 5 food bins at Feversham Girls’ ensure that material is disposed of through anaerobic digestion and in-vessel composting, which allows valuable organic matter to be recycled, renewable energy to be produced and rich soil to return to the Yorkshire farmland. Not only were these environmental achievements made, but a saving in waste management costs was also made for the school.
This rejuvenation of Feversham Trust’s recycling set up corresponded well with the values of the schools, and the goals of their student Eco Ambassadors who are committed to improving recycling and protecting the environment. Whilst most schools only have general waste services set up, the Feversham Education Trust’s schools now have three different labelled containers in their canteens, for food & packaging, plastic bottles, and general waste, which is effective as more segregation ensures higher recycling rates. The Eco Ambassadors have assisted with organising internal recycling bins and creating helpful posters for the operation of these, whilst overseeing that they are used correctly, and that segregation goes ahead successfully.
Lisa Walker, Bronte and Feversham’s Estates Manager, says;
The school formed an Eco Ambassador group to address concerns about the amount of waste produced each day. The students are fully committed to improving the recycling of food waste, plastic waste and cardboard. The Eco Ambassadors have educated the students through posters and presentations with input from Forge.
Forge Recycling have been instrumental to the implementation of the food waste recycling at the school. They have met with us to discuss the options available to us and assisted the school to reduce our carbon footprint as well as directly reducing the cost of our waste management.
The school have a meeting with the Education Officer at Forge Recycling to discuss further ways to improve on recycling our waste and moving towards being a greener school.
Thank you to the Feversham Education Trust, and to Lisa for working with us at Forge Recycling, to ensure we continue to make great environmental achievements.
